I’m always looking for a good show to dive into, but with so much to choose from, sometimes I end up just rewatching my favorites. So in hopes of inspiring you to broaden your horizons, here is a list of seven shows on Netflix that are definitely worth branching out for.
Should I just stop here? Does it really get any better than Friends? This show has proven to be a timeless classic. The humor is lighthearted and the drama doesn’t weigh too heavy on the heart. With such a great spread of characters and personality types, it’s easy to feel like you’re right there with them in Central Perk, part of the gang. I think I’ve seen all 10 seasons of Friends at least three times, and it’s my go-to show to have on in the background while cooking or cleaning if Harley is asleep. If it’s even possible that you’ve gone your whole life without seeing this show, it’s time.
While Friends may have my heart, NCIS will always be one of my all-time favorites. I’ll even confess something… at one point, it had me googling “How to become a Naval Criminal Investigator.” Embarrassing, I know. But that’s how invested I am in the thrilling adventures of Agent Gibbs and his team! And the good news is, this show doesn’t seem to have an end in sight. So while characters may come and go, the story continues. And I’m committed.
3. Grey’s Anatomy
Though there are quite a bit of “relational encounters,” (wink, wink) it’s still great writing. But be warned, you will get attached, and you will cry. There’s just no escaping it. Unless you’re like me and you completely hold off on the next episode for a while because you know what’s coming and just don’t think you can bare it.
4. New Girl
Fresh out of a dysfunctional relationship Jess, our leading female, moves in with three single guys. What could go wrong?
New Girl is rich with personality and humor. And scoring a 94% on Rotten Tomatoes makes it pretty clear this motley crew will steal your heart, and captivate your attention.
5. Gilmore Girls
Serious binge-watch-warning with Gilmore girls! With a very unique mother-daughter relationship, these two gals will take you on quite the journey. There is so much back-story that unfolds as you watch, and just as many coming of age experiences.
You will surely find yourself picking a “team” when it comes to the gentleman callers in both young Rory’s life and her mom, Lorelai’s.
This show will keep you guessing all the way up until the end.
6. Madam Secratary
Any fictional form of entertainment that can inspire me to want to know more about the inner workings of our government is a win! This show offers so much class and substance. It’s fascinating to imagine members of our government dealing with crises like the ones in this show. Téa Leoni plays Elizabeth McCord, the Secretary of State. She and her arm-candy hubby, played by Tim Daly, steal the show and make a great TV couple. If you’re looking for a sophisticated drama that isn’t full of romantic flings and gossip, Madam Secretary is the one.
7. The Ranch
This Netflix original is a melting pot of some of my favorite actors, so I gave it a try and what do you know… I got hooked. Though The Ranch does have an unfortunate (over)use of strong language, the story is new and enjoyable. Most episodes end with a cliff hanger, so thank goodness you get a whole season at a time.
So text your friends and let them know you’re not going to make it out tonight. Then get into those sweat pants and hop in bed, it’s going to be a long night.
