Woohoo! I’m feeling super proud to share my very first, finished sewing project!
These coasters are SO CUTE, perfect for summer, and are 100% baby safe (since she can’t poke her eye out with them).
This was a fairly quick project, only taking me about 2.5 hours or so. If you’re an experienced sewer, I’m sure you could have knocked them out even faster.
Believe it or not, I got every last piece of material for my coasters out of a scrap bin! How fun is that?! If you don’t have a scrap bin, pop into Kiki’s and pic up a few fat quarters like these. They have a whole basket full right when you walk in the door.

When it comes to choosing your fabrics, you can mix them up as much, or as little as you’d like. You may choose to use all different fabrics, like I did, or maybe you’ll prefer a more conservative design. Whatever you choose, this pattern will work for you. Don’t be afraid to take some risks and have fun!
Each coaster requires 4 pieces of fabric (I used cotton), and 1 piece of cotton batting.
- Left piece – 4.5″ x 1.5″
- Middle piece – 4.5″ x 2″
- Right piece – 4.5″ x 2″
- Back piece – 4.5″ x 4.5″
- Cotton batting: 4″ x 4″
Once your fabric pieces are cut, press them really well. I used Terial Magic on mine. You can pick up a bottle at Kiki’s when you choose your fat quarters.

You’re ready to sew!
As you all know, I’m a beginner, so of course I’m going to give credit where credit is due! Here is where I got my inspiration and step-by-step instructions. I love the way Susie lays out each step with a corresponding photo, so I’ll leave the instructions up to her this time 😉 . You’ll notice her coasters are slightly different than mine though, as she has some patchwork involved. If the patchwork overwhelms you, or you’re just going for a simpler design, follow my cutting instructions above then use your pieces with her pattern.
HAPPY SEWING!
I can’t wait to see your finished projects! Make sure to post a photo on Instagram and tag @mrs.parsons so I can applaud you. You can also get some kudos by posting to our Facebook page.
